MARIANG

“Mariang for Community and Ecosystem Services” is the name of the organization led by the Khasi community in Sylhet, Bangladesh. The Khasi word "Ma-riang" means "ecosystems." The Khasis consider nature as their mother. This nature provides all the elements of their life, like a mother. Therefore, they never want Mother Nature to be polluted or degraded.

Background

Mariang, the community-led organization of the Khasi people, actively stewards nearly 10 million native trees through eco-friendly betel leaf cultivation. By championing these sustainable practices, Mariang and the Khasi community capture approximately 2.5 million metric tons of CO₂ each year, playing a crucial role in carbon sequestration. Their efforts not only combat climate change but also provide essential ecosystem services—releasing oxygen, supporting pollination, maintaining water tables, and offering food and shelter for countless animals and birds. Mariang’s initiatives protect small beneficial insects and safeguard endangered flora and fauna, preserving the region’s rich biodiversity.Despite these achievements, the Khasi community faces significant challenges. Generations of dependence on betel leaf cultivation have left them economically vulnerable, especially asclimate change, falling prices, and shrinking market demand threaten their primary source of income. Limited access to education, healthcare, nutrition, and secure land rights further compounds their struggle for survival. In response, Mariang leads the Khasi community in bold, forward-thinking action. The organization encourages crop diversification and has introduced coffee cultivation as an innovative alternative. By embracing this new approach, Mariang not only strengthens the community’s economic stability but also enhances forest conservation and boosts carbon sequestration. These efforts create meaningful jobs, empower local people, and drive sustainability and resilience.Through Mariang’s leadership, the Khasi community is building a brighter, more sustainable future—removing
thousands of tons of carbon from the atmosphere and ensuring prosperity for generations to come. Importantly, community initiatives like coffee plantations will provide the Khasi people with better access to education, nutrition, and healthcare services. These efforts also create new opportunities to preserve
their unique culture, traditions, and basic human rights, empowering the community to thrive while honoring their heritage.
